The Astra 4000 was intended to compete with other compact, blowback semi-auto pistols, like the Walther PP, Mauser HSc and the Beretta M1934.
The pistol features a frame mounted manual safety, as well as a half-cock hammer notch and magazine disconnect/safety and the magazine release is a button at the bottom of the left side grip.
