PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD – Legal

This unit standard is for persons who need to demonstrate knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000), herein after the Act that is applicable to legally possess a firearm. Persons credited with this unit standard are able to:

• Demonstrate understanding of the statutory duties and obligations of firearm ownership as contained in the Act;
• Demonstrate understanding of the statutory prescriptions applicable to the possession, handling, carrying, storage and use of firearms as prescribed by the Act; and
• Demonstrate understanding of the statutory prescriptions applicable to the possession and storage of ammunition as prescribed by the Act.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD – Basic/Private use

This unit standard is for anyone who privately uses a handgun, shotgun and self-loading rifle and or who requires a Competency Certificate in terms of relevant legislation. People credited with this unit standard are capable of:

• Handle and use a handgun.
• Handle and use a shotgun.
• Handle and use a self-loading rifle
• Carrying out basic inspection and maintenance of a handgun, shotgun and self-laoding rifle for safe use.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD – Business Purposes

This unit standard applies to persons who will, through the application of knowledge of the current legislation, carry, handle, shoot and maintain a handgun for business purposes. A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge of safe handling principles in a business environment.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the mechanical functioning of the handgun; shotgun and self loading rifle.
• Demonstrate knowledge of handgun; shotgun and self loading rifle use under adverse conditions.

Legal is to be completed first, thereafter 3 Gun Basic and finally 3 Gun Business purposes.
